Revitalizing South LA by Moving Residents to Economic Opportunity

The South Los Angeles Transit Empowerment Zone (SLATE-Z) is a collaboration of 71+ cross-sector partners with a common mission: "to revitalize South Los Angeles by moving residents to economic opportunity". Led by Los Angeles Trade Technical College, SLATE-Z received a federal Promise Zone designation in 2016, and is pursuing five goals related to jobs, economic activity, education, public safety, and transit. The SLATE-Z geographic area is five miles wide, from Crenshaw Boulevard to Central Avenue, and is roughly framed by the Expo, Crenshaw, and Blue Line light rail systems. SLATE-Z is home to 198,000 residents; 46% have incomes below poverty.
